The Penley Fire west of Sedalia was estimated at 3 acres early Monday as more than 125 firefighters from 10 agencies protected about a dozen threatened structures, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said evacuations were being scaled back, but crews and deputies were expected to remain overnight for structure protection.
The sheriff’s office said its updated map used red for evacuation orders and yellow for warnings. The official record available for this report does not identify the current boundaries.
An earlier notice ordered residents within a 2-mile radius of West Douglas Fire Station 132, at Colorado 67 and Oak Valley, to leave for the Sedalia Post Office, according to an earlier sheriff’s office update. That notice predates the scaled-back evacuations; residents should follow current official alerts rather than rely on the earlier radius. The updates reviewed did not include a separate road-closure list.
The American Red Cross said it opened an emergency shelter at New Hope Presbyterian Church, 3737 New Hope Way in Castle Rock. A later sheriff’s office update said the church was closing for the evening because no one then needed shelter. The update also directed evacuees with personal pets or livestock to Iron Horse Open Space, 6516 S. Interstate 25 in Castle Rock; commercial livestock was not accepted.
