Woodland Park council to hear Griffith Cabin landmark proposal Oct. 1
The council will consider a local historic designation for the property after a unanimous recommendation from the city’s Historical Preservation Committee.
Woodland Park City Council will hold a public hearing Oct. 1 on a proposal to designate the Griffith Cabin property at 116 W. Lake Ave. as a local historic landmark.
The council voted 7-0 on Sept. 17 to approve the initial posting of Ordinance 1534 and set the hearing, [according to the meeting minutes](https://woodlandparkco.api.civicclerk.com/v1/Meetings/GetAttachmentFile(fileId=1449). The ordinance proposes designating the property, which includes the cabin and a detached garage. The owner, Murray WP Cabin, LLC, agreed to the nomination, the ordinance says.
The city’s Historical Preservation Committee unanimously recommended the designation after a Sept. 1 hearing, [the committee record says](https://woodlandparkco.api.civicclerk.com/v1/Meetings/GetAttachmentFile(fileId=1446). A [city staff report](https://woodlandparkco.api.civicclerk.com/v1/Meetings/GetAttachmentFile(fileId=1440) says the property meets local criteria for age, historic significance and retention of materials that preserve its character.
The city’s architectural inventory estimates the rustic cabin was built around 1899 and describes its distinctive slab-log siding. The proposed designation is local; a city survey’s finding that the cabin may be eligible for the National Register does not designate it as a federal landmark.
The ordinance would establish local landmark status but does not specify what permits or approvals future changes to the property would require.
